The Madras Jewellers & Diamond Merchants Association (MJDMA) was established on 11 February 1938 with 14 illustrated jewellers. Today, MJDMA has grown to reach promising heights with a membership of more than 650 jewellers. Owing to a strong and disciplined system and value-based principles, the association has earned the recognition from the Government and is treated as a trade body on par with the Chamber of Commerce. With the intention to further develop the Jewellery trade in South India, the MJDMA took the initiative to organize the first ever B-2-B jewellery trade exhibition in South India in Chennai in May 2005 entitled ‘Gem & Jewellery India International Exhibition' (GJIIE).

The 2nd edition of GJIIE 2006 had more participants and visitors and gained much popularity amongst the traders. Many accolades have come to MJDMA ever since for taking such an initiative to grow the jewellery trade in South India . The motto of this exhibition is” For the Trade By the Trade”.

The 3rd edition of GJIIE held from 2-5 March, 2007 saw 150 exhibitors from Tamil Nadu, Jaipur, Kolkata, Kerala and Mumbai. Most of the gold jewellery exhibitors said business had been excellent, with serious queries from small towns in Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh. The 20 exhibitors from the Kerala Pavilion were extremely happy with queries from Madurai , Chennai and Salem . Light-weight gold jewellery was much sought after. MJDMA's 4th edition of GJIIE 2008 had 200 plus exhibitors and visitors from all over India and its neighboring countries. The show gained immense popularity over the past four years.
